On September 12, the First International Corporate Team Online Chess Tournament in Memory of Vitaly Fedorovich Konovalov, 1st President of JSC TVEL, was held. 12 teams participated in the tournament, including enterprises, members of Fuel Company, as well as partners of TVEL Company, represented by Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Station (Ukraine), National Atomic Company Kazatomprom and JSC Ulbinsky Metallurgical Plant (Kazakhstan). Evgeny Bareev, a famous Russian chess player, an international grandmaster, two-time winner of team world championships and four-time winner of World Chess Olympiads, was the chief judge of the tournament.

In his opening address to tournament participants Gennady Lisavkin, Vice-President of JSC TVEL, reminded that Vitaly Fedorovich Konovalov was not only an outstanding President, but also a gifted chess player, candidate master, chess champion of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in 1958-1960, who during his employment with Ulbinsky Metallurgical Plant was capped for Kazakhstan national team. His motto was to never rest on his laurels, strive for new challenges and victories, Gennady Lisavkin said. He continued by saying that Vitaly Fedorovich was a confident person, who constantly told his colleagues that there was always room for perfection, either in career, or in life. This rule was also applied to his passion for chess, Mr. Lisavkin added. According to Vice-President, organization of chess tournaments is a long-standing and beautiful tradition among nuclear experts: Chess were played and are played in scientific laboratories and at manufacturing sites both by my peers and quite young employees.

Previously chess tournaments in memory of Vitaly Fedorovich Konovalov were held at enterprises, associated with his professional life: JSC Ulbinsky Metallurgical Plant (Kazakhstan), JSC Chepetsky Mechanical Plant (Glazov) and JSC Mashinostroitelny Zavod (Elektrostal). This tournament shall support chess popularization at whole new level. Considering that teams include candidate masters and first-grade players, the game promises to be an interesting one, Gennady Lisavkin assured. The fact that Evgeny Bareev accepted the invitation to be the chief judge of the tournament, proves its high status. I believe that all participants will demonstrate their skills, stamina and genuine team spirit.

The tournament consisted of a group stage and a play-off against the clock 10 minutes for each player for one game. As early as first minutes of the tournament the chess players demonstrated a high level of games.

Teams of Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Station, JSC Chepetsky Mechanical Plant, JSC Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Complex and JSC Siberian Group of Chemical Enterprises struggled into semi-finales. Representatives of Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Complex and the team of Siberian Group of Chemical Enterprises Sibregion-Promservis LLC from Seversk (Tomsk region) met in the final game. Eventually chess players of Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Complex celebrated the victory. In accordance with tournament regulations bronze medal was awarded to teams of Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Station and JSC Chepetsky Mechanical Plant.

Evgeny Bareev, the chief judge of the tournament, a grandmaster and Head of Russian national teams, distinguished not only the high intensity of the game on virtual boards, but, generally, the level of tournament organization. Considering this, to my knowledge, is the first experience of such tournaments holding, I need to say that the tournament was a quality one, all the games were played, there were no technical problems during the tournament, Evgeny Bareev said. Of course, the organizers may make certain improvements, modernize the tournament, but this format of online-tournament proved to be effective. I would like to thank managers of JSC TVEL for inviting me to the tournament as the chief judge. Russian Chess Federation holds plenty of various competitions, but unfortunately online-tournaments are quite rare. It was an interesting experience for me to take part in such a tournament.
